HRV on Apple Watch: where to find it, what it measures and how far to trust it
How to find it on iPhone
- Open the Health app.
- Tap Browse, then Heart.
- Tap the heart rate variability entry. Apple's guide only says ‘tap an entry’, so look for it in that list.
- Choose the period. Apple says you can show the last hour, day, week, month or year.
These steps come from the user guide (Apple Watch User Guide, Heart Rate). They may change with your iOS version, and Apple has announced a redesigned Health app for later this year, starting in US English (Apple Newsroom, 2026).
How to find it on the watch
It depends on the model.
| Place | How to get there | Models |
|---|---|---|
| Health app, iPhone | Browse, Heart, an entry | The guide does not limit it by model |
| Heart Rate app, watch | Turn the Digital Crown to Heart Rate Variability | Series 12 and Ultra 4 |
| Vitals app, watch | Overnight, HRV replaces sleep duration. There is also a daytime view | Series 12 and Ultra 4 |
| Mindfulness app, watch | Do a Breathe session of 1 to 5 minutes. The 2024 paper says it saves an HRV estimate | The paper does not limit it by model |

What the number is: SDNN
Apple accepts there are several ways of computing HRV and says HealthKit uses SDNN: the standard deviation of the intervals between normal heartbeats, typically in milliseconds. Samples are recorded automatically on the watch (Apple Developer, SDNN). It also stores the beat-to-beat sequence, from which other metrics are calculated (Apple, 2024). That is why another app can show a different number with neither being wrong.
Series 12 and Ultra 4 add a wrinkle. Apple describes two variants: Recovery HRV, for daily signals of stress and recovery, and overall HRV, for broader health (Apple Newsroom, 2026). The Apple pages we read do not say which formula Recovery HRV uses. Since iOS 27, HealthKit also lists an RMSSD type, with no description on its page (Apple Developer, RMSSD). Do not assume both are SDNN, and do not compare one with the other. What changes between metrics is in the general HRV guide.
When the watch takes the reading
According to the November 2024 paper, the watch tries to measure in the background and only analyses a reading if you stay still enough. The default rhythm is every four hours, rising to every two hours or every 15 minutes if you turn on irregular rhythm notifications or AFib History (Apple, 2024). For Series 12 and Ultra 4, Apple says as often as every five minutes (Apple Newsroom, 2026), again while you are still, so the number of measurements depends on how much you move (Apple Support, Heart rate).
Two readings can come from very different moments of the day. To compare days, look for similar conditions: a Breathe session at the same time, kept apart from background readings, or the overnight ones if your model gives them. This is practical advice, not a study finding.
How accurate it is
| Study | Watch and people | Result |
|---|---|---|
| O'Grady et al., 2024 | Series 9 and Ultra 2. 39 healthy adults, 316 measurements over 14 days, against a chest strap | Underestimates HRV by 8.31 ms on average. Mean absolute error 20.46 ms (28.88%). Resting heart rate: mean difference -0.08 bpm, error 5.91% |
| Bonneval et al., 2025 | Series 6. 78 healthy adults aged 20 to 75, in the lab, against an ECG | Best agreement at rest. R-R intervals and heart rate: error 1.15%. N-N intervals: moderate agreement, error 31.31% |
| Miller et al., 2022 | Series 6, one of six devices. 53 adults, one night in a lab | Sleep or wake: 88% agreement (κ 0.30). Stages: 53% (κ 0.20). The abstract gives no HRV figures |
On Miller et al., 2022: yes, Apple Watch is one of the six devices. HRV was a secondary aim, but the abstract only reports sleep results: all six are valid for the timing and duration of sleep, and all six need improving on stages. In both analyses, Apple Watch had the lowest kappa. The authors' group receives support from a wearable maker, which took no part in the study.
A practical sum: with an average error of 29%, a 40 ms reading can be off by about 12 ms with nothing having changed in you. A drop from 40 to 30 fits inside that margin. O'Grady et al., 2024, urge caution in using these data to monitor performance. That is why an average over several days serves you better than one morning's figure.
Error varies on other wearables too: from 5.96% to 16.32% for nightly HRV on five devices, against an ECG, in 13 adults over 536 nights (Dial et al., 2025). Apple Watch was not included and the protocol differs.
For Series 12 and Ultra 4, Apple published its own study with over 1,000 participants, against an ECG chest strap (Apple, 2026). It comes from the manufacturer and measures heart rate, not HRV. As of 2 November 2026 we have found no independent validation of HRV on these two models on PubMed.
What value is normal on an Apple Watch
There is no norm. One real reference, with its limits: in a study of 733 US participants with iPhone and Apple Watch, median HRV before pregnancy was 39.9 ms, with the middle half between 32.6 and 48.3 ms (Mishra et al., 2024). These are people who later became pregnant, not the general population, so it only gives a sense of scale.
How to use it
- Wear the watch with a good fit. If it is loose, the sensors might not capture accurate readings (Apple Support, Vitals).
- Look at the week or month view before the day view.
- If you are after a single daily number, see the guide to recovery scores.
GoForIt, which is not out yet, compares HRV with your own range and never with a generic average. How it works explains the idea.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find HRV on Apple Watch?
- On iPhone: Health app, Browse, Heart and the variability entry. On the watch, the Heart Rate app only shows it on Series 12 and Ultra 4: turn the Digital Crown to Heart Rate Variability. The steps may vary with your iOS version.
- Why do I have so few readings?
- Because the watch measures HRV while you are still and, according to the 2024 paper, its default rhythm is every four hours. On Series 12 and Ultra 4 it can reach every five minutes, but that too depends on how much you move.
- Why does another app show a different HRV?
- Because it may calculate another metric. HealthKit stores SDNN and also the beat-to-beat sequence, from which other metrics are calculated (Apple, 2024). If the app uses RMSSD, the numbers are not comparable.
- How accurate is Apple Watch HRV?
- A single reading has a wide margin. With Series 9 and Ultra 2, in 39 adults, the mean absolute error was 20.46 ms, or 28.88% (O'Grady et al., 2024). Resting heart rate did better. Use averages over several days and draw no conclusions from one figure.
